Where Are All The Tornadoes?

Apr 07, 2010
According to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) there have been only 83 tornadoes to strike the United States as of April 7th. This statistic is way below the four year (2005-2009) average of 316.

It only takes a couple of outbreaks for the U.S. tornado count to reach the yearly average, but this doesn't seem likely in the near future. Severe weather is not expected for another week or so across the lower 48. Either way you look at it, this trend is very welcoming for homeowners and businesses. However, we all can't get too comfortable since April, May and June are the busiest months when it comes to tornado frequency.

Tornadoes as of April 7th:

  • 2005-2009 Avg: 316
  • 2005: 127
  • 2006: 366
  • 2007: 341
  • 2008: 544
  • 2009: 204
  • 2010: 83
